The Bassum Abbey, the nucleus of the place, is still there, today it is not only the oldest abbey in Lower Saxony, but also the only still existing canonical abbey in the EU.
The collegiate church is also still there, an imposing Gothic brick church from the 13th century.

In 858, the noble lady Liutgart gave her paternal inheritance and founded the monastery so that the noble families of the country had the opportunity to give their daughters a Christian education. The monastery is the primal cell and the beginning of Bassum, which was then called Birsina. In Europe, the Bassum Abbey is considered to be the oldest still existing canonical monastery. The ensemble of buildings with the collegiate church, the abbey and the other surrounding collegiate and farm buildings is impressive and well-maintained.
