For the central and isolated position it occupies, it offers splendid panoramas over the whole Alpine arc, from the Maritime Alps to Cozie. Monte Matto and Argentera can be seen in the distance.

Coming from Passo delle Crocette, the last stretch is pretty steep but still easily feasible. On the other hand, the climb to Mount Tibert on the other side is easier. The view over the Maira valley and the Grana valley is beautiful

Monte Tibert e Passo della Crosetta – giro ad anello

    12,5km

    880m

Embark on the Monte Tibert e Passo della Crosetta loop hike, a difficult 7.8-mile (12.5 km) journey that challenges you with 2892 feet (881 metres) of elevation gain over approximately 5 hours and 33 minutes. This trail offers extensive panoramic views and varied alpine terrain, starting on roads before transitioning to well-marked paths. You will traverse vibrant grassy pastures, rocky sections, and steep slopes, with some parts near the Monte Tibert summit requiring careful navigation and scrambling over rock steps. From the summit, you can enjoy expansive vistas across the entire Alpine arc, including the Maritime and Cozie Alps.

This difficult loop hike demands a good level of fitness, sure-footedness, and alpine experience, so be sure to wear sturdy shoes. The trail is rated E+ for experienced hikers, with some sections potentially reaching a SAC difficulty of 4-6. While generally well-marked, some narrow ridge segments may require using your hands for support. If you plan to hike in snowy conditions, be aware that specialized equipment like crampons might be necessary for your safety.

The hike begins at the Santuario di San Magno, a beautiful 15th-century sanctuary that serves as an important pilgrimage destination. As you ascend, keep an eye out for marmots, which are a common sight along the trail. The Monte Tibert summit, at 2648 meters, marks the highest point of the Grana Valley watershed and is crowned with a distinctive wooden cross, offering truly breathtaking 360-degree views. You will also notice the distinct vegetation along the ridge, with grassy tufts on one side and rhododendrons on the other.

Embark on a difficult 9.9-mile (15.9 km) loop from the Sanctuary of San Magno, a hike that demands very good fitness and alpine experience. This challenging route features a significant elevation gain of 3128 feet (953 metres) and typically takes about 6 hours and 48 minutes to complete. You will traverse varied terrain, including alpine and mountain hiking paths, as well as sections on paved and unpaved roads. From Monte Tibert, enjoy splendid panoramic views across the entire Alpine arc, stretching from the Maritime Alps to Cozie, offering a true sense of solitude in raw, wild nature.

This trail is rated as hard, requiring sure-footedness, sturdy shoes, and potentially specialist equipment for some highly technical or hazardous sections. The starting point at the Sanctuary of San Magno is easily accessible, but be prepared for a full day on the trail. Given the demanding nature and duration, it is wise to start early in the day to allow ample time for completion before dusk. Always check local conditions before heading out, as the high alpine environment can present unexpected challenges.

The Sanctuary of San Magno, built in 1400, serves as a beautiful and ancient starting point, adding a cultural dimension to your outdoor experience. As you hike, you will encounter Colle Fauniera, a high mountain pass at 2,481 metres, known for its recognition in the Giro d'Italia cycling race. This pass, also called Colle dei Morti, features a monument dedicated to cyclist Marco Pantani and offers a genuine alpine experience due to its remote location and limited vehicle traffic.
