The Hellhaus survived the Second World War, but was completely destroyed by arson in 1988. In the following years, a temporary roof was put on.

The Hellhaus is also known as the third castle in Moritzburg. It is considered an important example of baroque park design in Germany and the last of its kind in Europe. After years of vacancy and decay, the start of renovation work by the state-owned company Sachsenforst was publicly announced at the end of 2020.
