The red gear is supposed to bridge the gap between the university and the Ruhr area industry: Reinold Künmann, head of the State Building Construction Office of the University of Dortmund, had the idea of bringing machine parts from old (disused) industrial plants to the campus as art objects. The red-painted gear wheel that can be found on Campus North in front of the physics building started in 1980.

Since it was founded in 1968, the Technical University of Dortmund has been teaching and researching in the global field of tension between nature, people and technology. It gains its profile through the interaction of an ensemble of faculties in the natural and engineering sciences, social sciences as well as humanities and cultural studies. The Technical University of Dortmund, founded in 1968, has gained a special profile since it was founded 50 years ago, with 17 faculties in natural and engineering sciences, social and cultural sciences. Alongside RWTH Aachen University, it is the second technical university in North Rhine-Westphalia.

34,491 people are currently studying at around 80 Bachelor and Master courses at TU Dortmund. It is one of the 20 largest universities in Germany.
