In Scotland’s Southern Uplands, hiking up Cairnsmore of Fleet will bag you the country’s most southerly 2000-foot (610 m) mountain. The summit actually sits at 2,333 feet (711 m) and affords exceptional views far and wide.

With a subsidiary top - the Knee of Cairnsmore - this mountain has a modest ridgeline which lends itself to lovely circular walks with no need to go back on yourself. Steep but not technical, in good weather hiking up Cairnsmore of Fleet is perfectly doable by the whole family throughout the year.

Hiking up a mountain of forest, moorland and international views

A popular mountain thanks to its relative ease of ascent, accessible roads and fantastic views, the main starting point is the car park to the south west of Bardrochwood Moor. Hiking through this plantation gives an atmospheric start and covers a good deal of the initial ascent.

Rising above the trees, Cairnsmore of Fleet has a distinctly moorland feel and you’ll soon find yourself at the summit cairn. From here, it’s the lazy swirl of Wigtown Bay that will catch the eye. Looking north, the Galloway Forest Park undulates into the distance, with its craggy mountains and swathes of plantations.

If your eyes and the weather are good, looking south will reveal the Lake District peaks in England and Snowdonia’s summits in Wales. To the west, Ireland is visible, making this summit rather good for country spotting.

Newton Stewart makes for a lovely base, with campsites, B&Bs and a youth hostel. You can hike throughout the year but snow cover is the domain of those with appropriate equipment. Keep an eye out for scraps of plane wreckage, left over from numerous plane crashes, most recently in 1979.

This is a very easy to reach top that is quite varied in terms of terrain. The way up can feel quite long, but the views from the top are worth it and the way down affords for great views ahead. The walks through the estate and the meadows at the beginning and the end of the walk comes with beautiful woodland trails and the rhododendron along the way is stunning when in full bloom. Good sturdy shoes are a good idea as the top is boggy in places. It is well worth adding the second, sligthly lower top.

This 7.9-mile (12.7 km) route involves an elevation gain of 2231 feet (680 metres) and typically takes around 4 hours and 20 minutes to complete.
