The Old Courthouse ("Old Courthouse") is a representative building built in the Greek Revival style from 1816 to 1864, which originally served as a federal and regional court. The building was the site of the historically significant Dred Scott v Sandford trial, in which the Black Dred Scott had sued for release as a slave.

Since 1930, the Old Courthouse has no longer served as a courthouse. It has served the then newly created Jefferson National Expansion Memorial since 1935. In 1941 parts of the building were renovated and, above all, its roof was renewed, so that from 1942 it could be used for office space and a museum exhibition.
