The Berlin Rieselfelder were areas created by James Hobrecht at the end of the 19th century for the purification of the waste water of Berlin. Some are in the Berlin area, some in the surrounding area, like this one. Everyone is out of order today. While around 10,000 hectares were used for wastewater treatment in 1928, in 1992 it was only 1,250 hectares. The trickle fields represent a considerable contamination problem due to the heavy metal pollution; their task has now been taken over by sewage treatment plants.
