The association 'Museumseisenbahn Ammerland Saterland e.V.' was founded in September 1991.
The association was founded after the Ocholt local citizens' association found itself unable to maintain the Edewecht narrow-gauge railway. Subsequently, the municipality of Westerstede took over and sought to acquire the line in order to establish a museum railway, which was intended to become a tourist attraction.
