The Puerta de Elvira has undergone different transformations throughout its history, the most important being the one carried out in the reign of Yusuf I of the Nasrid dynasty. At this time it was formed as an autonomous fortress with four towers. Due to its importance and dimensions, it was the main gate of the city, due to its functions as main post and customs control. A Muslim cemetery extended from Puerta de Elvira, in the area where Campo del Triunfo is today.

The Elvira Gate or Elvira Arch (Báb Ilbím) was the access point to the Alhacaba and Albayzín from the Medina Elvira road, and that is where its name comes from.
The Puerta de Elvira, at the foot of Monaita, was joined by a stretch of wall that would ascend the Cuesta de Abarqueros. Its construction by the Zirid sultans dates from the beginning of the 11th century.

The Puerta de Elvira, also known as the Arco de Elvira, is a historic city gate in Granada. This gate was the main entrance to the city during Islamic rule, giving access from the road to Madīnat Ilbira (Medina Elvira) to the Cuesta de Alhacaba and Calle de Elvira. The gate was originally built in the 11th century by the Zirí sultans and later fortified in the 14th century during the Nasrid period. It is a fine example of Islamic architecture, with a horseshoe-shaped arch and flanking towers.
