e Koppelpoort is a city gate in Amersfoort. It is a combination of a land and water gate. The name is probably derived from the Eastern Middle Dutch word coppel which means common meadow. The area outside the Koppelpoort was a communal area. And was called the Koppel.

During our inline skating tour through the Utrechtse Heuvelrug we passed this beautiful city gate.

The Koppelpoort is a double city gate in Amersfoort. It is a combination of a land and water gate. The name is probably derived from the East Middle Dutch word coppel which means common pasture (also called meent). The area outside the gate was a communal area and was called the Couple. It is believed that the gate was named after this area. The name probably does not indicate the fact that the gate has two functions.
