    Monnow Bridge is the only surviving mediaeval fortified river bridge in Britain where the gate tower stands on the bridge. As such, the bridge is Grade I-listed and has been designated as a Scheduled Monument. According to the local tradition, building work commenced in 1272 to replace a Norman timber bridge.

    Easy walk around Monmouth town centre. Not hard at all. Plenty of available parking and places to eat and drink. Monmouth is a border town and has a long military history. The Roman's founded a garrison here and called it Blestium.
