Originally Bastion VIII was part of the defensive belt around the city. When that defense lost its usefulness, the area deteriorated into a landfill, but nature fought back. Today, you can discover about twenty different biotopes in this natural environment. You can enter for free as an individual, every working day between 08.00 and 16.00.

In Bastion VIII you can really 'experience' nature. The site was once part of the defensive belt around the city; later it became a landfill. Several decades ago, the area was thoroughly remediated and since then it has been a nature education visitor center.

There are about 20 different biotopes that can be explored up close without disturbing the environment: willow forest, grassland, scrub…

You can visit the park for free without guidance.
A guided visit or workshop is free, but reservation is required.

Bastion VIII was part of the 19th century Wellington Barrier.
Until the 20th century, Dendermonde was surrounded by metres-high ramparts and wide canals, which they commonly referred to as fortresses. There are also remains of the infrastructures that used to defend the city in other places on the outskirts of the city.
Now make this site is managed by Natuurpunt.
