This tour to the source of the Isar and the rustic Kastenalm is perfect for you if you want to immerse yourself in the unique landscape of the Karwendel Alps without having to drive over technically demanding paths or steep climbs. The route always rises only slightly and leads you over a well drivable path through the beautiful Hinterautal. You drive along the Isar to its source. A short distance further you can strengthen yourself on the Kastenalm, take a deep breath in the middle of the mountains and then make your way back to Mittenwald. The route begins at the Mittenwald train station and takes you through the Riedboden nature reserve to the neighboring Austrian town of Scharnitz to the entrance to the Karwendel valleys. There you turn onto the easily navigable forest path that leads you along the "young" Isar through the scenic and beautiful Hinterautal. The path climbs only slightly, so that you can easily make it if you are not so mountainous. At the springs of the Isar you can enjoy the tranquility and the wonderful nature and fill up your drinking bottles with crystal clear spring water. From here it is not far to the Kastenalm. It is managed in the summer months and offers traditional snacks and refreshing drinks. The return trip to Mittenwald follows the same route as the approach - but this time it's all downhill!Tip:
If you feel like it, you can turn this tour into a cool “Bike & Hike” adventure: Simply park your bike at the Kastenalm and continue on foot towards the Hallerangeralm. The ascent takes about 2.5 hours and rewards you with a view of the Lafatscher and a cozy stop at the alpine pasture.

On this bike tour around the Walchensee you will get that Canada feeling. The turquoise-green Walchensee with its wooded mountains all around is not only one of the deepest, but also one of the largest alpine lakes in Germany in terms of area. There are numerous romantic bathing and picnic bays on its south bank. If you want something more exotic, you can visit the Viking film village "Flake" on the west bank. From Wallgau you start at the guest house and drive a few kilometers north until you reach the lake. Now it goes along the shore to Zwergern and the town of Walchensee. Shortly afterwards you will reach the Viking village, where you can visit five huts from the film "Wickie and the Strong Men", which were rebuilt here after filming. We continue along the west bank. In Urfeld you have reached the northernmost point of the lake - here it is worth taking a nice break with coffee, cake and, above all, the magnificent view of the lake and the mountains behind it. On the beautiful riverside path and later on the toll road (free of charge for cyclists) you finally circle the lake completely and drive back to the starting point of the tour.

This tour takes you around the picturesque Walchensee, takes a detour to Jachenau and ends with a drive through the idyllic Isar Valley. It is relatively long, but technically rather easy. A real pleasure tour with dreamy views over the lake, wonderful nature and a culinary highlight at the end: Shortly before your destination, the Maxhütte above Wallgau invites you to stop for a break. From the terrace you have a dream panorama of Wallgau and the Karwendel Alps. On a clear day you can see as far as the Stubai Glaciers from here. You start at the Haus des Gastes in Wallgau and first take a beautiful cycle path to Obernach and Einsiedl. Via the Zwergern peninsula you reach the shore of the picturesque Walchensee. You circle it along the west and north banks until you turn into Jachenau in Sachsenbach. It's really beautiful here and when you turn right at the hereditary farm and drive over the “Jachen” stream into the forest, the only really crisp ascent of the tour is waiting for you. The descent down into the Isar Valley is all the more beautiful until the Maxhütte in Wallgau calls for a stop.Tip:
Take your bathing suit with you and enjoy the refreshing Walchensee, which is one of the most popular bathing lakes in the area.

On the way you can experience the Isar flicker live, pass the idyllic Barmsee, discover the unreal humpback meadow landscape and the brightly painted rows of houses in Mittenwald. On the tour there is an endless panorama and numerous rest stops. The tour begins at Mittenwald train station and takes you over the beautiful Isar bridge directly to the bank of the river, which you follow over a quiet bike path to the barracks and on to the Isar reservoir, where swans and other water birds cavort. After the beautiful trail above the lake, you switch back to the bank and you will soon reach the cozy village of Krün. If you are really hungry, the Hotel Barmsee is recommended, a few kilometers from Krün. If the weather cooperates, a detour to the lake with a cooling bathing insert is worthwhile.Relaxed and rested, the way back is still waiting for you. You continue to Klais and from there over a wonderful path through the typical regional humpback meadows to the Schmalensee. Shortly before your destination in Mittenwald, it is worth stopping at the Gröbelalm.Tip:
If you want to hang on for another five kilometers, you can continue from the Isar reservoir to Wallgau. There, the Auhütte attracts visitors in early summer and late autumn with snacks, coffee and delicious pastries.

The warm-up round: the name says it all! Regardless of whether you have just arrived and want to acclimatise a little, whether you have little time or want to take a short ride with the kids: the warm-up round at Krün is the ideal introduction to your cycling and mountain bike holiday in the Alpenwelt Karwendel or as a quick exit in between. Through wide, green fields you will experience the holiday resorts of Krün and Wallgau in front of the impressive backdrop of the Karwendel and Wetterstein massifs. The round begins at the hiking car park in Krün and first leads you through wide fields to Wallgau. On the way you can enjoy the fantastic view of the Alps. In Wallgau it is worth taking a short break - here you can take a look at the numerous "Lüftlmalereien". This is the name of the ornate decorations on many houses, most of which depict scenes from the Bible or the eventful history of the Upper Isar Valley. There are also many worthwhile places to stop for a break here. You then drive back to the starting point in Krün via the idyllic bike path along the Isar.Tips:
The idyllic river bed of the Isar at the height of the Isar bridge in Wallgau is a great destination, especially for families. Here the kids can play in the refreshing waters of the Isar. This leisurely round leads around the Hohen Kranzberg and past Lautersee and Ferchensee. On the way you get all the nature experiences that you can experience in the Karwendel Alps. On the trip to Krün, the unique humpback meadows are a very special highlight. And the view of the world-famous Elmau Castle is simply magnificent ...The starting point for this relatively easy (and flat) mountain bike tour is the parking lot on Krottenkopfstraße in Krün. From here you follow the course of the Isar for a while, drive past the Maria Rast chapel and soon reach the unique humpback meadows. With countless bumps in the road, the landscape here looks almost unreal and a little playful. These small humps are a relic of the last Ice Age and are highly worth protecting. That is why the traditional scythe is still used here, fertilizers are dispensed with and herds of sheep and goats graze the humpbacks. It won't be boring as the tour progresses either. The view of Elmau Castle is definitely a good reason for a little break and at Ferchensee and Lautersee it is also worthwhile to get off your bike for a short (or longer) time and let your mind wander. If the weather is good, you can also take a refreshing swim here. The route then leads you back via Mittenwald. You drive through the humpback meadows again before you reach the starting point in Krün.

You enjoy the impressive mountain panorama, follow the course of the idyllic Isar and reward yourself with regional delicacies in one of the numerous refreshment stops. A pleasure tour for all the senses, which, due to its short distance, is ideally suited as a warm-up tour and as a shared experience for families with children. The round trip through the Riedboden and the Hoffeld begins at the chargeable parking lot at Waudl in Mittenwald. From here you can go directly to the nearby Riedboden area. You cycle through green meadows and partly wooded sections to the southern end of the Riedboden. Over a bridge you change to the other bank of the Isar and follow the river through the wide courtyard from now on to the north, where you will soon reach the starting point of the short circuit.Tip: At the southern end of the Riedboden you have the opportunity to visit the neighboring Austrian town of Scharnitz. There are many natural sights to visit here, such as the Gleirschklamm, the Karwendelsteig or the Adlerkanzel.
