Villefranche de Conflent belongs together with Fort Liberia to the UNESCO World Heritage. The fortifications were built by Vauban, the older city is still as then, top maintained and maintained, with nice shops.
The absolute highlight is the partly underground, partly over-thought staircase with 1000 steps, which connects the city with the fort.
If you hike further up, you will finally be rewarded with a fantastic panorama, which reaches to the 50 km distant sea.

When buying tickets, it is advised to take the footpath up and down the underground stairwell. This has the advantage that you can enjoy the longer climb the ever better prospective view (even if the sun is bang quite a few places) and the descent in the stairwell not so much oncoming traffic ... Above you will be familiar with a short introduction and received a leaflet in German. At the end of the nice documented tour you can refresh yourself in the cafe. There are also picnic areas in the shade.
