Since the 14th century was located in this place the small village Liebau. Under pressure, all residents left their homes around 1952 because the GDR government was too close to the border. For years it stood empty, until 1972 demolished in the course of the border security all buildings.

Here stood before the construction of the inner German border, the village Liebau. There is no sign of the buildings. These were canceled. Now only a commemorative plaque commemorates the place, as well as a nicely laid out rest area

The village center Liebau is a memorial on the former inner German border. It is located in the extreme south of Thuringia in the Sonneberg district (on the Föritz district) just a few dozen meters from the Thuringian-Bavarian border.
