By order of the government of the GDR in 1954 the construction of the "national memorial and memorial Buchenwald" began. Until 1958 a monumental national monument was erected on the south side of the Ettersberg. The design included three large mass graves. The didactic concept of the facility shows the visitor a way from death to life: coming from the crematorium through the camp, the path leads down to the tombs and then up to the bell tower as the symbol of freedom and light. At the center are the German communist resistance fighters. Source: buchenwald.de/119
