The city of Wittenburg with 6303 inhabitants (2020) was first mentioned in 1194 as a provincie and in 1230 as a civitas (city).
In the 18th and 19th centuries, mail coaches ran from Boizenburg to Schwerin via Zarrentin and Wittenburg. After the founding of the German Empire, the postal system was taken over by the Empire in 1872 and many imperial post offices were established.
