What has arisen here in thousands of years is irrevocably destroyed and I find it bad. Do you have to keep draining and destroying these valuable natural oases? The peat formation began in the 5th millennium BC, when the climate warmed and the post-glacial permafrost disappeared. The peat layer is now about five meters thick.

Moor paths were laid out early on - one of them is considered the oldest known moor path in the world. You can learn more about the Campemoor on a moor nature trail.

Peat is currently being extracted from "agriculturally used areas" in the Campemoor. In theory, all of the moors in Lower Saxony should be rewetted. This is met with resistance from the residents of the Campemoor, especially in the agricultural sector.
