The castle was built in the Renaissance style in 1565 on the site of a previous castle. Since then, the Schwanenburg has always been owned by the Lords of Menzingen, who, after the destruction of the moated castle in World War II, had to move to the only slightly damaged Schwanenburg, where they still live today.

The Barons of and to Mentzingen (also Menzingen, Mensingen, etc.) are a Kraichgau noble family, said to be descended from a common ancestor with the Gölers of Ravensburg and the Lords of Helmstatt, and named after their medieval ancestral seat of Menzingen (now a district of Kraichtal). The lineage of the family, which still exists today, dates back to 1253. The main building of the upper castle, the Schwanenburg, still stands, and has served as a residence since 1945.
