The square is named after Højbro, which has been Slotsholmen's connection to the mainland since the 15th century.
Where the square is today, there were two small streets, Store Færgestræde and Højbrostræde, leading from Amagertorv down to the beach until the late 18th century. The ferry road got its name because there was a ferry to Amager at the end of the road. A little to the east was Lille Færgestræde, which is now gone.

Højbro Plads was established after the fire in 1795, when the block of houses between Færgestræde and Højbrostræde was closed and an open space was created that could also serve as a fire belt. Almost all houses were built in the neoclassical style immediately after the fire.
