Cebreiro is one of the oldest refuges for pilgrims and probably existed as early as the 9th century. In any case, in 1072 it received the title of hospital, cared for by a monastery under the rules of Cluny. The hostal next to the church belonged to this. The church was carefully left intact in the style of the 10th century. Inside is a beautiful statue of Santa Maria la real from the 12th century with the miraculous chalice from a legend, which also adorns the coat of arms of Galicia.

Area and height of O Cebreiro, a high mountain area, in the Galician-Leonese massif, which reaches an altitude of 1,300 metres. The Camino Frances crosses the town passing in front of the church and the inn-hospital that is next to it. Even before the pilgrimages, the hill of O Cebreiro was well known by the Romans, since the road that led through Triacastela to the center of Galicia passed through it.
