The fountain survived the air raids on Dresden in February 1945 undamaged. In 1961 it got its current location in the Weißen Gasse.

The goose thief fountain was created by Robert Diez between 1876 and 1880 with funds from the Güntz Foundation. The fountain, which gave the artist a worldwide reputation, is located in the Weißen Gasse, near the Kreuzkirche on the Altmarkt. However, it was only erected here in 1961 after the original Ferdinandplatz location had been destroyed in 1945.

In the Weißen Gasse we find the goose thief fountain, with which the builder Robert Diez had a great public success. The figure is said to be reminiscent of a vagabond who stole two geese for dinner for his farewell party.
