At the entrance to the port of St. Johns are the ruins of Fort James, which was built on the cliffs at the beginning of the 18th century to secure the town. The fortification has never really been involved in combat in its history. The fact that most of the heavy artillery pieces and cannons can still be found in their original location makes Fort James unique in Antigua, as most of the weapons in the other forts have since been sold.

Fort James is a fort at the harbor entrance of St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda. It was built to protect St. John's Harbor and is one of many forts constructed by the British in the 18th century. Fears of a French invasion prompted its construction. It sits on a promontory overlooking the city to the northwest. A powder magazine, several cannons, and the foundations of the fortress wall have survived. The main attraction today is the excellent view of the surrounding harbor.
