According to legend, little Cristina, daughter of King Bermudo II de Léon, got lost in the deep forest. It would have been certain death if a bear hadn't nursed her to the rescue and protected her from wild animals. Long after that, in 1024, when the monastery was founded, she had the scene immortalized in stone: the bear and the child can be seen above the archway in front of the courtyard of the pilgrim hostel.

The San Salvador Monastery was founded in 1024 by the Infanta Cristina, daughter of King Bermudo II and Queen Velasquita, who retired to this convent after the death of her husband Ordoño. After the death of the Infanta, the monastery was given to the monks of Cluny Abbey in 1122 to found a Benedictine monastery.

There is a relief above the gate to the vegetable garden.

The restoration work will take until 2024. At least.
