The Rosstrappe is 403m above sea level. N.N. one of the smaller granite rocks on the edge of the Bodetal. However, it is no less spectacular because of its steeply sloping flank and offers a great view of the Hexentanzplatz and the Bodetal.
The Rosstrappe got its name from the white steed on which the king's daughter Brunhilde fled from the giant Bodo. The horse jumped from the cliff onto the opposite rock, the giant Bodo fell into the river and gave him his name: Bode.
The imprint of the white horse can still be seen here in the rock.

    Sıkça sorulan sorular

What are the best hiking trails to reach the Rosstrappe viewpoint?

There are several well-regarded trails to reach the Rosstrappe. For a more challenging ascent from the Bode Gorge, the President's Way (Präsidentenweg) is a recommended path, approximately 4 km long. Another option is the Schurre, a path laid in zigzags, which allows visitors to climb down into the Bode Gorge from the Rosstrappe. For a less strenuous option, the Rosstrappe Chair Lift provides a comfortable ascent, with its top station just about 500 meters from the viewpoint.

Is the Rosstrappe viewpoint accessible for families with young children or strollers?

Yes, the Rosstrappe is considered family-friendly. While some hiking trails can be steep, the most comfortable way to reach the viewpoint is via the Rosstrappe Chair Lift, which transports visitors up 244 meters in altitude. The area around the top station and viewpoint is generally accessible, though some paths directly to the cliff edge might be uneven. For walks with young children, consider the less strenuous paths near the summit.

Are dogs allowed on the trails and at the Rosstrappe viewpoint?

Generally, dogs are welcome on the hiking trails in the Harz mountains, including those leading to the Rosstrappe. However, it's always advisable to keep dogs on a leash, especially near the steep cliff edges and in crowded areas. Check for any specific restrictions at the chairlift or within the Berghotel Rosstrappe if you plan to use those facilities with your pet.

What are the parking options available near the Rosstrappe viewpoint?

Parking is available near the Rosstrappe, typically at the base station of the chairlift in Thale or closer to the summit if driving up the road. However, visitor tips indicate that parking can fill up quickly, especially on weekends and during peak season. Arriving early in the morning is strongly recommended to secure a spot.

Is the Rosstrappe suitable for a winter hike, and what should I wear?

While the Rosstrappe offers impressive views year-round, winter hikes require extra preparation. The trails can become icy or snow-covered, making them more challenging. If visiting in winter, wear warm, layered clothing, waterproof outer layers, and sturdy hiking boots with good grip. Traction aids like microspikes might be beneficial. The chairlift usually operates in winter, providing an easier way to reach the top, but always check operating hours beforehand.

How crowded does the Rosstrappe viewpoint get, especially on weekends?

The Rosstrappe is a very popular destination and can get quite crowded, particularly on weekends, public holidays, and during peak tourist seasons. Visitor tips frequently mention that it is usually well-attended. For a more tranquil experience and to avoid the largest crowds, it is advisable to visit on weekdays or arrive early in the morning.

What other historical or natural landmarks can be seen near the Rosstrappe?

From the Rosstrappe, you can clearly see the Hexentanzplatz (Witches' Dance Floor) on the opposite side of the Bode Gorge. Near the viewpoint itself are the remains of Winzenburg Castle, a refuge fort dating back to the Neolithic Age. The legendary 'horse's hoofprint' in the rock is also a significant natural feature with historical folklore.

Are there any cafes, restaurants, or accommodation options directly at the Rosstrappe viewpoint?

Yes, there is a mountain hotel called Berghotel Rosstrappe located at the entrance to the Rosstrappe viewpoint. It has an observation terrace and offers a place to rest and enjoy refreshments. For more extensive dining or accommodation options, the nearby town of Thale provides a wider selection.

What is the significance of the 'horse's hoofprint' at Rosstrappe?

The 'horse's hoofprint' is a pear-shaped hollow in the granite rock, measuring about 70 cm long, 55 cm wide, and 13 cm deep. It is central to the local legend of Princess Brunhilde, who, while fleeing the giant Bodo, supposedly leapt across the gorge on her white stallion, leaving this impression upon landing. The giant Bodo then fell into the river, giving the Bode River its name. Scientists, however, suggest it might be a weathered remnant of a Germanic altar basin.

What is the elevation of the Rosstrappe viewpoint?

The Rosstrappe is a granite crag that rises 403 meters (1,322 ft) above sea level. It stands majestically over the Bode Gorge, offering spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding Harz landscape.
