Somehow totally progressive: The lane of the old Harbug Elbe Bridge is now only used by pedestrians and cyclists. This was not always the case: it was opened at the end of the 19th century, especially for pedestrians and horse-drawn carriages. It was the first road bridge over the South Elbe. Horse-drawn carriages were replaced by cars and the tram was added. Today, all of this is shifted to the parallel bridges and the original idyll is back.

The Old Harburg Elbe Bridge, which was built between 1897 and 1899, is the last portal bridge of its kind in Hamburg. The bridge was opened on September 30, 1899 by Kaiser Wilhelm II. It is 474 meters long and was the first road bridge over the Southern Elbe. Therefore, in some sources it is also referred to as the Old Southern Elbe Bridge.
