At the beginning of the 14th century, the first buildings of a fortified farm complex were built on the site of today's new castle by the knights Johannes and Hermanus von Redwitz, who also had the first church built in Küps in 1302. In 1495, Heinrich von Redwitz gave the property as a fief to Friedrich II of Brandenburg-Ansbach-Kulmbach.
