The Church of St Swithun-upon-Kingsgate is one of Winchester's most unusual and charming historical sites. Its fame comes from its unique position: it is built directly over the Kingsgate, one of the last two surviving medieval city gates in Winchester.
A Church on a Gate: St Swithun's is believed to be the only church in England still in regular use for worship that is built over a medieval city gate. Its location above the Kingsgate makes it a unique "upper room" church.
