A striking bridge was built in the 14th century and has been destroyed several times. A castle towers over the town, the entire town center being a protected monument. The population lived separately, with the Christian side on one side and the Jewish population on the right. Besalú has the only surviving mikveh, a Jewish ritual bath for women, on the Iberian Peninsula. The town is characterized by narrow streets and low stone houses, cafés, and souvenir shops.

The mikveh in the synagogue is worth seeing, as is the beautiful old church near the destroyed monastery, which is of course also absolutely worth visiting.
