    Yürüyüş

Montaigle Castle is undoubtedly one of the most impressive ruins in Belgium. On the orders of Charles V, the magnificent building was plundered and set on fire by French troops in 1554. Although it was badly damaged, you can still get an idea of its former size when you visit the ruins. From the defensive wall and the remains of the towers you have a great view of the Flavion valley and the surrounding landscape.

Located at the confluence of the Molignée and the Flavion on top of a steep rock, the castle of Montaigle was a garrison site at the end of Roman settlement during the Late Roman Empire (3rd to 5th centuries).
The fortress was founded at the beginning of the 14th century on an older building by the Dampièrre family, then ruling the county of Namur. This was part of the inheritance of the youngest son of Guy of Dampière, Guy of Namur, also regent of Flanders, a prominent figure in the well-known Battle of the Golden Spurs.
