The tower was built between the 14th and 15th centuries as an observation tower. The entrance is far above ground and could only be climbed with a ladder. On the upper floor, a heated room served as an apartment for the tower guard.

The Ibergwarte is one of the preserved watchtowers in Heiligenstadt. Together with the Fegebankswarte, the Kodden- or Kötherwarte, the Rengelröder Warte, the Dünwarte and others, they formed a ring of watchtowers around the city. If enemies approached, the tower guard gave the housekeeper, who lived between the two towers of the Old Town Church and kept watch, a smoke or fire signal to close the city gates.
