The Catholic parish church of St. Johann characterizes the cityscape of Donaueschingen. Situated on a hill, the church towers with the two towers over the neighboring buildings such as the castle or the brewery.

Iskender Yediler was born in Eskisehir in Turkey and grew up in Germany. After graduating in graphic design, he studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and attended the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf. He presents a number of martyr sculptures in public spaces, including in Bonn, Cologne and St. Blasius. His most recent work in front of the Church of St. John shows the severed head of John the Baptist. It is said that he was beheaded on the orders of the Roman king Herod. The building with a double-tower façade in the Bohemian Baroque style was built from 1724 to 1747 based on a design by the Prague architect Franz Maximilian Kaňka from 1724. The high altar was erected in 1751.

The two towers dominate the cityscape of Donaueschingen and are considered the city's landmark.

The church's patronage rights lie with the House of the Princes of Fürstenberg. The patron, Heinrich Prince of Fürstenberg, was actively involved in the church renovation from 2007 to 2009.
