The church was built between 1902 and 1905. Its construction was financed by a massive private donation from Philippe Lê Phát Đạt (known as Huyen Sy), who was one of the richest men in South Vietnam at the time and the grandfather of the last Empress of Vietnam, Nam Phương.

Huyen Sy Church in Cho Diu parish, patron is St. Philip, is a catholic church in downtown HCMC. It is one of the oldest and most typical Catholic architectural symbols in Saigon.
A first, very simple, church was built here in 1859. A second church was built in the period 1882-1887, which deteriorated over time. A rich citizen, Mr. Huyen Sy (hence the name of the church) donated a large part of his wealth to have new church built. Construction began in 1902 and it was inaugurated in 1905.
