"L'Ange au Sourire" is a 13th-century Gothic sculpture located on the north portal of Reims Cathedral's western facade, carved around 1240. The statue was severely damaged during World War I when it was decapitated by a burning beam during the cathedral fire on September 19, 1914, with its head shattering into over twenty pieces after falling 4.5 meters.
The sculpture was painstakingly reconstructed from original fragments and a preserved cast, and restored to its original position on February 13, 1926.

The damaged angel became a powerful propaganda symbol for France during WWI, representing French cultural heritage destroyed by German bombardment, and in 1930 it was featured on a French postage stamp sold for 5 francs with a postal value of 1.50 francs.

The Smiling Angel, also known as the Smile of Reims, is a statue sculpted around 1240. This statue stands to the left of the north portal of the western façade of Reims Cathedral. It became famous during the First World War, when it was damaged by bombing and fire. Photographs before and after the destruction were widely reproduced and distributed, making the statue one of the most famous French medieval sculptures.
