For anyone wondering about the shoulder on state highway 1. Heading south on this section between the gravel and Te Hana I counted four pinch points. The two major ones are at Topuna bridge (marked here) and the descent entering Te Hana. The rest of this section has a shoulder. Best to wait for a gap and sprint across the bridge. On state highway 1 people drive fast and don’t expect to see cyclists.
I prefer to come down on the east side of northland past Waipu caves, then join this route at Te Hana, avoiding SH1
