The first reports about the eye of the needle came from the 16th century - at that time it was probably still a tree that was said to have healing powers if you crawled through it. In the 17th century this probably died and was replaced by a gate-like stone.

However, the legend with the healing properties still exists.

In the Friedewalder Salbuch the eye of the needle was first mentioned in a document in 1579 as "NolIenöhr" and in a source from 1589 it is still described as a hollow tree. Travelers who came by for the first time had to - following an old Hansel custom - crawl through the tree, with fellow travelers helping them with clubs. In 1596 Paul Hentzner described the eye of the needle as a stone with holes in it that Landgrave Moritz had erected in place of a hollow tree.
