The name is that of an important Tongeren family (14th century), and the tower was originally connected to the Steenderpoort via a street within the ramparts, the Velinxstraat.

The Velinxtoren is a round corner tower and a remnant of the medieval city wall from the 13th century. This medieval wall with six gates and thirteen towers surrounded a city area of 54 hectares. Part of the Roman wall was reused. From the Moerenpoort a new wall was built along the Jeker riverbed to the Velinxtoren. The tower was named after a prominent Tongeren family from the fourteenth century. In the nearby cultural centre de Velinx, part of the sixteenth century city wall has been incorporated into the foyer.
