In the 19th century, tombstones in France became important places of remembrance, decorated with symbols and signs. Especially in the case of journeymen craftsmen (compagnons), three special symbols were often engraved into the stone, indicating the profession, community affiliation, and life path of the deceased. These signs served to permanently mark the identity and craftsmanship of the deceased and to preserve their memory in the tradition of the compagnonnage.
