Zernez is a village in the Engiadina Bassa/Val Müstair region. Zernez was first mentioned in documents in 1161 as Sarnetz. After a major fire on September 5, 1872, which left only 40 of 157 houses undamaged, part of the village was rebuilt in the urban style and with flat roofs, which are otherwise untypical for the Engadin. During the Second World War, the Ova Spin and Crastatscha checkpoints were built in the area around Zernez.
