This church has chosen the Nativity of the Virgin Mary as its patron saint. While the biblical writings of the New Testament do not explicitly mention her birth, nor her parents, early apocryphal texts (those not included in the canon of the official Bible) identified Saint Anne and her husband, Saint Joachim, as her parents. The Church of Saint Anne—located on the Sea of Bethesda in Jerusalem—is considered the site of the Virgin Mary's childhood home.
