The not quite 220 kilometers long Ruhr rises in the Rothaargebirge, about three to four kilometers from the center of Winterberg. Among other things, the long-distance hiking trail Rothaarsteig leads past the Ruhrquelle. From here you can also walk on the Ruhrhöhenweg the entire Ruhr to the mouth near Duisburg-Ruhrort in the Rhine. The Ruhrtal cycle path also starts at the Ruhrquelle. And in winter there is a small ski area here. The associated Ruhrquellen hut is usually open all year round.

It's only a small spring, and somewhat unspectacular. But when you consider what begins here at the source of the Ruhr, this unspectacular aspect is the real highlight! The Ruhr region's eventful history wouldn't exist without this place. Not to mention, the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path begins (or rather ends) here.

The river that gave its name to a metropolitan area originates three kilometers from Winterberg. The Ruhr rises from the Ruhrkopf, a 696-meter-high mountain, in a small forest protected by nature. Below the source is a memorial stone and a circular path that invites visitors to take a short break. From its source in Winterberg to its mouth in Duisburg, the Ruhr is 219 kilometers long. Important trails such as the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path and the Rothaarsteig Trail pass by the source of the Ruhr.
