The Castle of Antimáchia is outside the town, on the edge of a plateau, 170 m above the bay of Kardamena.
The fortress was built in the 14th century by Helion de Villeneuve, the Grand Master of the Order of Saint John. Attacks by the Ottomans in the 15th and 16th centuries, as well as the siege of the island in 1457, were repelled. The castle was almost completely destroyed by the earthquake in 1493, and it was rebuilt a year later by Grand Master Pierre d'Aubusson.
