The University of Tartu (Estonian Tartu Ülikool) is the oldest university in Estonia and its only full university. It was founded in 1632 under King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden in Tartu (then Dorpat).

The early neoclassical Tartu Town Hall, built at the end of the 18th century with baroque influences, is located in the center of the city and is one of the most important symbols of the city. On the ground floor were the prison and the custody office, on the upper floors the council. Until today, the city administration operates in the town hall, on the ground floor there are the visitor center Tartu, an information center and a pharmacy.
