The Temple of Ezra is dedicated to Khnum, the ram-headed creator god. The pronaos, the vestibule of the actual temple, is the only part of the temple that is still preserved. As inscriptions show, the deities Heka and Neith were also worshiped here.

The Temple of Khnum in Esna is one of the most fascinating examples of late Egyptian and Roman temple architecture. It is located about 55 kilometers south of Luxor and is now primarily known for its spectacularly restored astronomical ceiling.

The temple was dedicated to the ram-headed god Khnum, who in Egyptian mythology is considered the creator god who formed humans and gods on his potter's wheel.
Construction phases: The structure visible today—the so-called pronaos (front hall)—dates predominantly from the Roman period (c. 41–250 AD), but was built on the ruins of an older Ptolemaic structure.
Unique location: The temple now sits in a deep pit, about 9 meters below the level of the modern city of Esna. This vividly illustrates the extent to which Nile silt and settlement debris have accumulated over the centuries.
