Großer und Kleiner Markgrafenstein are remarkable natural monuments located in the Rauener Berge, south of Fürstenwalde/Spree in Brandenburg, Germany. These colossal glacial erratics, also known as "Findlinge," stand at an elevation of 173 meters and are among the largest of their kind in the country. Composed of ancient, 1.2-billion-year-old red Karlshamn granite, these stones were transported from southern Sweden by massive ice sheets during the Saale or Weichselian glaciations, offering a tangible link to the Ice Age.

    Yürüyüş

Here are the largest boulders in the region. At one you can see the spot where a piece of the boulder was blown off. The large stone bowl that still stands today in front of the Pergamon Museum in Berlin was made from it.

The margrave stones embody millennia-old history. After Brandenburg they came through the Saale ice age about 300 000 years ago. The Great Markkgrafenstein was then worked on and reduced by humans. According to Schinkel's plans, it was already made by Morris, a large stone bowl in front of the Altes Museum in Berlin.
Today, the great Markgrafenstein is also used by free climbers for climbing exercises.
