Could there be any more of an iconic location than this? Of course, it's always always busy so don't expect to get through quickly but if you're exploring the city for the first time - it's a must!

The Brandenburg Gate is the most famous Berlin landmark. The gate is crowned by a sculpture called the Quadriga. This is a work designed by the sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow. Until the fall of the Iron Curtain, it stood directly on the border between East and West Berlin and thus symbolized the meeting of the Warsaw Pact and NATO during the Cold War at the most sensitive point in world politics on their common border.

The Brandenburg Gate can look back on around 200 years of history. Until 1989 it was a symbol for the division of Berlin and Germany, but today it is a national symbol for unity and thus one of the city's most famous landmarks. Wall, barbed wire, watchtowers: no other place made the division of Germany clearer than the Brandenburg Gate.
