The Limes ran right through the Taunus more than 2,000 years ago. Countless watchtowers and forts still bear witness to this today. Some are well reconstructed and preserved, others only have the foundations. At the Kleiner Feldberg fort there are still remains of the wall, so you can get a good idea of the extent. Incidentally, this example is the highest Roman fort on the entire Limes.

Although only the (restored) foundations remain, this Roman fort ruin is one of the best-preserved ancient structures of the Upper Germanic Limes.
