With its 1,300 hectares, this is one of the largest nature reserves in Flanders. The Zwarte Beek valley is known for its extreme variation: from a swampy peaty stream valley to the bone-dry sandy drifting dunes on the heath. Go out and enjoy this beautiful piece of nature.

The De Watersnip reception centre immerses you in the world of plants and animals that live in the valley. It is also an excellent starting point for the many (wheelchair-friendly) walks.

The Valley of the Zwarte Beek with the Zwarte Beek in it, which flows from the source in Hechtel to the mouth in the Demer in Diest over a distance of 35 km through the stream valley. The entire valley is with its 1407 hectares one of the largest nature reserves in Flanders. 879 hectares of which are recognized as nature reserves. The Valley of the Zwarte Beek spreads over the municipalities of Hechtel-Eksel, Houthalen-Helchteren, Beringen, Lummen, Halen and Diest. The nature reserves are located in various places along the stream with hiking areas set up in five places.
