In 1931, during civil engineering work in Zülpich, it was discovered that the ancient city had long possessed what the modern city was just beginning to establish: a sewage system. This system belonged to a well-preserved Roman thermal bath complex, hidden beneath the museum forecourt. A protective structure erected at the time had been considered in danger of collapsing since the late 1990s. Demolition and reconstruction made it possible to establish a "Museum of Bathing Culture" with the thermal baths as its centerpiece. It opened in 2008.
