The memorial stone placed here commemorates the first international automobile race, which took place on June 17, 1904 on German soil as part of the Cup donated by the US newspaper publisher Gordon Bennett (de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordon-Bennett- Cup_ (Motorsport)). There were wagons from England, France, Belgium, Italy, Austria, Germany and Switzerland. After starting here in Saalburg, the big loop led across Weilburg, Limburg, Idstein and Oberursel, among others. The race ended after four laps and almost 500km. It won the French Léon Théry. The grandstand here in Saalburg held space for 2500 spectators.
